The Wedding date:
I initially estimated the date of the wedding as approximately 1911. Thomas’s son Thomas (1876 – 1965) is there with his wife, Elizabeth (nee Rayner) and (and I was guessing here) their son Thomas (1908 – 1955). He looks about 2 or 3. His brother Richard was born in April 1912 and is not in the photograph. The background of the photograph looks autumnal so this placed it as late 1910 or 1911. Elizabeth (nee Hunt) was killed in August 1910 so the more likely date was late 1911. This means that Elizabeth Wild would have been 2 or 3 months pregnant, although she does not look pregnant it is possible. A second possibility was that it was after Richard was born and he is not in the photograph i.e. late 1912 but the young Thomas looks too young for this. A third possibility was that it is Richard in the photograph and the younger Thomas is not in the photograph. This would have placed the date as circa September 1914. The preferred estimate was always 1911 and this proved to be correct.
The Independent Holiness Mission:
Quoted from the web page of the Church of the Nazarene:
International Holiness Mission.David Thomas, businessman and lay preacher, founded The Holiness Mission in London in 1907. Extensive missionary work developed in southern Africa under the leadership of David Jones, and the church was renamed the International Holiness Mission in 1917. It united with the Church of the Nazarene on October 29, 1952, with 28 churches and more than 1,000 constituents in England under the superintendency of J. B. Maclagan, and work led by 36 missionaries in Africa.
And information from The London Gazette infers that it was finally wound up as a company in the early 1970's
I first wrote this ‘essay’ in March 2006. Since then my research into my family tree has continued and various other sources of information have come into my possession. It is impossible to add these and note each addition. I have therefore re-written sections to incorporate new information as it has come into my possession and listed below are the approximate dates I have done this and (from the third update onwards) a brief summary of the added information.
1st update May 2007
2nd update January 2008
3rd update June 2008 - Information regarding the Pentecostal League of Prayer. Also following a re-vamp of the entire page a re-organisation of the sections and re-writing of some paragraphs to fit the new page style and better incorporate the new information.
December 2008 - Extra pictures of Thanksgiving Hall, Leicester added. More detail of the movements occupation of 167 Mere Road added
January 2009 - Further, more accurate information on meeting places of the I.H.M and Independent Holiness Movement and the occupation of 167 Mere Road.
